about us
La Comedia Puertorriqueña was founded in 1965 by Actress and Producer Sandra Rivera, Set Designer Carlos Marichal and Theater Director Rafael Acevedo. With the support of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, the new company presented three productions during its first theater season. Audiences enjoyed Five Finger Exercise by Peter Schaffer, Champagne Complex by Leslie Stevens and Yerma by Federico García Lorca. With this challenging and risky adventure, La Comedia Puertorriqueña established itself as respected member of Puerto Rico’s theatre community.
When the First International Theater Festival was created in San Juan in 1966, the company staged The Fox and the Grapes by Brazilian dramatist Guilherme Figueiredo, followed by Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams and Luigi Pirandello’s Vestire gli ignudi (Nude) at the second and third editions of the festival.
Today, La Comedia Puertorriqueña is a registered non-profit 501(c)3 Theater- Arts Company and is considered one of Puerto Rico’s leading stage companies, yearly producing plays by international and Puerto Rican authors.
